LUST TOPPING
MONTREAL CHARTS
:::

Male singing group, LUST, is back on top of the charts. The group's impressive
reading of Air Supply's 1985 nugget Just As I Am, has already taken pole
position in Jamaica as well as on the Canadian Reggae charts.
Singing Melody, one of the members of LUST (the other members are Lukie D,
Thriller U, and Tony Curtis), told the Jamaica Gleaner that the decision to
update the Air Supply track happened based on a suggestion by Lukie D. "It was
Lukie D's idea because he is a fan of Air Supply. He found the song and invited
us to sing it. We knew the song would have taken off the way it did because we
had great confidence in it," said Melody.
LUST has been knocking on the doors of stardom ever since the group came to fore
in 1997. Their debut single Sweetness of Your Love spent multiple weeks at the
top of the local charts and earned the group several awards the following year
at the now defunct Jamaica Music Industry Awards.
Melody pointed out that LUST plans to maintain the pace that was set by the
success of Just As I Am. "LUST was on top back then and we were concentrating on
our individual careers for a while and that caused the impact of the group to
wane a bit. Now we are back on top and that is exactly where we intend to stay,"
he said.
A follow-up single to Just As I Am has already been earmarked for release.
Melody, who refused to divulge details about the song, said a video for the
track will be done shortly. The group is currently being pursued for several
performances in the Caribbean and North America. The group will next perform in
Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

AFRICENTRIC EDUCATION
FAIR

BLACK LEARNERS ADVISORY COALITION
Angela Wilson to speak at Afrocentric Education Fair – Sept. 17 at
McGill University

Montreal, August 28 – Angela Wilson, one of the two parents responsible
for spearheading the Public Afrocentric School project in Toronto (opening its
doors Sept. 09), is coming to Montreal on Sept. 17. The Black Learners Advisory
Coalition (BLAC) invited Mrs. Wilson to be a guest panelist at the upcoming
Afrocentric Education Fair to be held at McGill University.
BLAC is the group responsible for submitting the first Public Afrocentric School
proposal to the English-Montreal school board (EMSB) last May. The Focus Schools
Commission assigned by the EMSB is currently revising the proposal and should
render its decision in October. In the meantime, the recent riots in
Montreal-North have brought back the attention on the social-ills confronting
Black and Minority Youths in particular, among whom (in the case of young
Blacks) there is a nearly 50% dropout rate in the Province.
Through this Afrocentric Education Fair, BLAC wants to address the key role of
education in saving these youths from drugs, street-gang violence and crime. The
group maintains that a school where the curriculum will lift their self-esteem
and self-pride will help to counter the effects of discrimination and stimulate
their interest for education. The Fair will also update the community on the
progress of the proposal to the EMSB and how people can support this project.
The Afrocentric Education Fair will be held on Wednesday, September 17, 2008, at
McGill University – 3480 McTavish, 2d floor, Lev Bukman Conference Room, from
6PM-9PM. Admission is free. For more info: 514.777.7251 or

THE FASTEST MAN ON
EARTH
:::

Jamaica's own Usain Bolt created history in
Beijing as he became the first man to set records at the same Olympics in all
three of the following: the 100 meter, 200 meter and 4 by 100 relay events,
since Carl Lewis achieved that goal in 1984. The world watched and celebrated
with Bolt, sending a wave of pride to circulate amongst Jamaicans at home and
abroad.
