::: BLACK & WHITE AFFAIR 2K9 :::
[ December 1, 2009 ]

Great music, elegantly dressed
patrons and positive vibes is the concept behind the black and white affair.
This seems to be the answer that we get when speaking to each of the promoters
of the original black and white affair in Kingston Jamaica. Black and white
affair was started by three well known promoters; Dennis (Wet Wet), Lee and
Mickey otherwise known as Mr. Solid, in December of 1998.
These three gentlemen saw the need
for an end of year ball with a little more elegance than what was being offered
at the time. They wanted to have a year to year event that was somewhat formal
but that would also attract patrons from all age groups. There was also a focus
on having an event that would allow couples to once again dress up and come out
to the dancehall and enjoy themselves.
The promoters insist that black and
white is really about the people and the music. The music, we understand, is
highly specialized and specific that night. The promoters ensure that the
selectors that night are from the cream of the crop. They have chosen Stone Love
as the year to year sound to represent this upscale party from its beginning in
1998. We must note that the promoters of Black and white in Jamaica celebrated
their tenth anniversary last year. Afrique, out of New York is also one of the
sound systems that Dennis, Mickey and Lee carefully selected to entertain
patrons for their fabulous event. Many other sounds are used in rotation.
The promoters have created and
sustained an event that has worldwide and very loyal patrons flying to Kingston
Jamaica at every year end. Many of these patrons, we are told, are Canadians!
Black and white affair has grown into such an institution that the promoters had
to move the dance that was usually held at Laroose in Portmore to the national
arena in Kingston where it has been held for the last couple of years. There are
now chapters of the event in Miami, Texas and of course here in Montreal where
we try to keep the concept of elegance and glamour at the forefront of our
version of this event.
We, Partyvybes and Lady D, are
happy to once again invite our loyal patrons to come out on December 5th and
celebrate our 7th year of Montreal's Black and white Affair. Our venue this
year, the Polish Hall, located at 2721 Jolicoeur, only adds to the elegance and
great atmosphere that we work very hard every year to bring forth for that
night. Stone Love, specifically selector Rory will surely entertain and add to
the euphoric experience that is felt by the patrons of Black and white affair.
Join us on December 5th and be apart of the event that is in anticipation year
round. Tickets are almost all gone so get yours today!

PASSA PASSA INVADES MONTREAL ::
[ January 12th, 2009 ]

THE "DREAM TEAM" Swash International "The Passa Passa Sound" Swash
International, the real Passa Passa sound, was established in 1991 by the bright
mind of young O’Neil Miles, whose love for music went back from the days he
attended Jamaica College.
In a short time Swash International became one of the top ranked sounds coming
out of Kingston Jamaica, from the late 90’s going on into the year 2000. This
was due to the hard work put in by Miles and his team of selectors which grew in
numbers with the addition of Carl “Maestro” Shelly.
Swash International began
receiving a lot of request to play at top events happening on the local
dancehall calendar, playing alongside top sounds such as Stone Love, Metro
Media, Rebel T, Jam Rock, Renaissance, Coppershot, Bass Odessey among others.
Swash International took the business to another level when they started to play
overseas as well. With the introduction of the street dance Passa Passa which
was established by Miles in March 2003, this also increased the popularity of
the sound. As Passa Passa got bigger and bigger, Swash International benefited
tremendously as playing as the resident sound, people from all around, both
locally and overseas got to witness, their true potential. Also with the sale of
Passa Passa’s DVD and CDs all around the world, status was elevated on the world
stage as they started to have a lot of fans overseas.
Check out Swatch International live in Montreal at the E.B. Club Lounge on
Saturday January 31st, 2009 with King Farre and more.

THE ETANA EXPERIENCE ::
[ December 8th, 2008 ]

Big Yard - Monday
December 8,
2008: Alton Nehemiah Reggae music has birthed yet another rarity- a spirited
and soulful singer/songwriter in the eloquent and enchanting empress Etana!
In just one short year, Etana has been hailed as one of the burgeoning new and
sensational sound in the roots Reggae era. This young woman, a small one at
that, in a largely male-dominated industry makes her presence even more
powerful.
Her debut single, Wrong Address, co-written with Sean Element and released in
the spring of 2006 has created waves throughout the music scene. The recognition
is attributable to her unique and expressive vocals which envelope the song, as
well as the song’s lyrical content. To catch her in performance is to experience
an intriguing mix of the sultry and meditative – her body sways and dances as
her voice soars and her musical testimonies are as edifying as they are
captivating.
Etana’s beginnings are humble, but influence greatly her intense passion for
music and the sense of maturity and respect with which she approaches her art.
With her roots sunk deep in August Town, Jamaica, the home base of Reggae icon
Sizzla, but her feet physically planted in Miami, Florida after migrating there
with her family at 9 years old, Etana tried to succeed in the music business as
a member of the all girl pop group Gift.
It was not until she returned to the source, uncannily to start up an internet
caf.. with a friend in the busy Kingston metropolis that her lifelong dream
began to be realized. She scored an audition with Fifth Element Records, the
management company largely responsible for launching the careers of Richie Spice
and Chuck Fender.
Floored by her powerful and sometimes raspy alto voice, the Fifth Element
management team immediately asked her to join Richie Spice’s touring party as a
backing vocalist. The ensuing fifteen months would see Etana stepping up and out
to soak up some of the stage lights, gracing stages in Europe and North America
and independently in Africa.
Wrong Address struck a resounding chord with Reggae enthusiasts and still
receives heavy radio rotation. Her most recent single Money released in the
summer of summer 2006 has proved to be a radio friendly hit.
From reggae and pop to rock and jazz, her musical influences are varied and
though she is not one to subscribe to labels, Etana describes her brand of music
as reggae soul – “It is straight from the heart, straight from the soul,
straight from the people and everyday life” .
Operating now from both Solid Agency, the leading Caribbean entertainment events
& artiste management company and the iconic Fifth Element Records, expect the
release of Etana’s debut album which is still untitled in the spring of 2007. In
the mean time her third single, Youths, though not officially released, has
already begun to enjoy popularity as evidenced from her live performances.
Prepare yourself for the Etana Experience!
Check out Etana live on Saturday
December 20th, 2008 at the E.B. Club Lounge 5345 De Maisonneuve West, corner
Decarie, Montreal alongside the New Kingston Band, Kya Kindu and many more.

ALTON LOSING CANCER BATTLE ::
[ October 10th, 2008 ]

[Jamaica Star]
Family members of legendary reggae/rocksteady singer, Alton Ellis, say the
singer, who has been battling cancer for several months, is not doing well.
Speaking with The Star last night from the United Kingdom, Clive Ellis, one of
Alton's sons, revealed that the family was not very optimistic as it relates to
Alton surviving the fight with the disease. "We can't say we are hoping for the
best in this situation. The family is looking for the worst," Clive said
regretfully. "He is gasping for air. He is not talking, he is not moving, I
don't think he is going to come out on top of this fight." Clive said the family
was still trying to keep strong in these difficult times.
He said his father has been in the hospital for a number of weeks, battling
lymphatic cancer. Rumours started circulating yesterday that Alton Ellis had
died. However, family members dispelled the gossip. Clive noted: "He (Alton)
isn't gone, he is still here. I'm actually in the hospital now, he is very weak,
but he is not gone (dead)."
Alton Ellis, a father of 15 children, came to the fore of Jamaican music in the
1950s and has since made his mark with hits such as Cry Tough and Girl I've Got
A Date among others.
The vocalist's first wife, Pearl, and his sister, Hortense, both died on October
19, in 2005 and 2000, respectively.
Tragedy also struck the Ellis family earlier this year when Alton's sister,
Veronica Ellis, was brutally murdered just before Mother's Day, along with her
teenage grandson.

::: IRIE JAMBOREE PULLS BUMPER CROWD AS COCOA
TEA, YELLOW, BEENIE MAN, ELEPHANT MAN, TARRUS SHINES :::
September 5, 2008

New York: Over 36,000 fun loving
reggae lovers, some coming from as far as England, Canada, Jamaica, Dominica and
even Japan jammed the Roy Wikins Park not only to rock to Cocoa Tea, Mavado,
Beenieman, Elephant Man, Yellowman, Tarrus Riley, Sizzla, Admiral Bailey and
others but also to celebrate the Caribbean's performance at the Beijing
Olympics. Large video screens recreated the Beijing experience of the record
runs by Usain 'Lighting' Bolt, Shelly Ann Frazier and Melaine Walker and the
crowds went wild. Representing our athletes were Aleen Bailey, Chelsea Hammond
and Bert Cameron who were present earlier in the day at the ribbon cutting
ceremony at the Media/VIP Tent to officially honor Usain 'Lighting' Bolt and
Veronica Campbell-Brown.
At about 9pm, when the MC announced that Mavado would grace the stage at Roy
Wilkins Park, this signaled that the 1 year hiatus had finally been over. It was
now up to Mavado to deliver for his fans stateside. Flags waved and flashing
lighters greeted the gangster from Jamaica's Cassava Piece community as he made
his way on stage and he immediately launched into his catalog of hit songs
including "Gully Side", "Gangster For Life" and "On The Go (Faster Than Bullet).
While his hard core fans would say he was awesome, overall his performance
lacked the showmanship that would set him apart from his peers. It was probably
the 'bag a long talking' that took the edge off his set. He clearly has the
crowd appeal and the hit songs to boot. He just needs to work on his on stage
presentation to make his set more effective.
The Doctor who was coming of an impressive European tour pranced on stage and
immediately had the crowd in a tissy as he went through his catalogue of hits
songs. The crowd lapped up ever word he said for the duration of his set.
Elephant Man, who came dressed in a USA and Jamaica Flag charmed his way into
the hearts of dancehall lovers with tracks like "Gully Greppa," "Signal The
Plane" and the popular "Nuh Linga" which he dedicated to Olympic Superstar Usain
'Lighting" Bolt.

Pictures courtesy of Gary (King Ashanty)
Representative of MontrealDancehall.com in New York
The top performer of the day however belonged to 'sweet, sweet' Cocoa Tea who
reeked havoc as he glided through his catalog of hits songs including "Rocking
Dolly," "Riker's Island," "I Lost My Sonia," "Good Life" and more. He captivated
the crowd with every track he delivered including 'Obama' - dedicated to
Illinois Senator and Democratic Presidential candidate, Barack Obama - which
brought thunders applauds from the young, middle age and the elders in the park.
Sizzla kept the vibes flowing with "Black Woman and Child," "Taking Over" and
"Rise Too The Occasion," while King Yellowman, proved he can still command the
stage, delivering classic hits like "I'm Getting Married in the Morning,"
"Nobody Move," "Nobody Get Hurt," "Zungu Zungu Zeng" and "Mad Over Me that left
fans in a frenzy.
New singing sensation Tarrus Riley was another top performer, engaging the crowd
with John Legend's, "Stay With You," and song of the year "She's Royal" that
brought the crowd to its feet.
Impressive performances were also delivered by Hero, who charmed the crowd with
"The Prayer." Konshens, was on point, RDX, DeMarco, Noddy Virtue, Dwayne
Stephens and Soca Queen Alison Alison all left fans begging for more. Canadian
Reggae singer Tanya Mullings charmed her new fans with her talent and suave and
based on her performance at Jamboree, was able to secure at least two upcoming
gigs. New York based reggae singer Elvis D had fans rocking and grooving with
his big hit Party Time that has been burning up the airwaves all summer. Ragga
Lox, Benny Bwoy and Empire Isis all had their moments in the spotlight.
The event, dedicated to Caribbean athletes in the recent Beijing Olympics,
climaxed with a video presentation that recreated the Beijing experience of the
world record runs by Usain Bolt, Shelly Ann Frazier and Melaine Walker. In
attendance and representing our athletes were Aleen Bailey, Chelsea Hammond and
Bert Cameron. Other celebrity guests who attended the event were Congress Woman
Yvette Clarke and her mother the Hon. Una Clarke; dj Capleton; former West
Indies cricketer Courtney Walsh; Kerri-Ann Wright, Miss Jamaica/USA 2008; Val
Cuffe and Sobers Esprit, executives of the Dominica Festival Commission who
travelled all the way from Dominica to attend the event. Much respect to Richie
B from Hot 102 FM in Jamaica, Robba Ranx from BBC 1 Xtra from out of London,
England; Mikey B from WAVZ 1170 AM Florida, Marlon Davis from Digicel, Carrie
Mullings, Sir B, from CHRY, 105.5FM in Toronto, Lexy Brooks, VIP Entertainment
Connected and the many, many other guests in the house.
With the successful staging of Irie Jamboree 2008 behind them, the organizers
have already started plans for Irie Jamboree 2009. What can they do to top 2008?
No one is sure what will be done however word on the street is that the event
will moving to a new, more secure venue that can accommodate the large crowd
expected in 2009.

::: D-LIFE HEADLINES FIREMANIA FETE PART IV ::
August 5, 2008

Born in Trinidad, Brooklyn-resident and New York’s Hot 97 (WQHT) personality
Dlife is the ranking diplomat for the emerging Soca movement. Soca (or “Soul of
Calypso”) is the most popular music in English-speaking Caribbean islands like
Barbados, Trinidad & Tobago, and St.Vincent. It forms the theme music to the
huge and celebratory “Carnivals” that occur in each country and now occur in 25
major cities across the world.
However, before Dlife joined forces with legendary reggae selectors Bobby
Konders and Jabba of Massive B, there were no DJs in the United States dedicated
to giving Soca any commercial airtime. “I remember sending CDs of mixes to
stations, only to be told they didn’t want a Soca DJ. At that time the carnivals
and pirate stations provided the outlet for the people to hear the music.”
Now, through his one-hour slot in the Massive B “On The Reggae Tip” program
every Sunday on Hot 97, Dlife can reach millions of people and serves as the
lightning rod for the Soca community.
Many credit him with breaking hit records like “Turn Me On,” “Soul on Fire” and
“Nookie” that provided Kevin Lyttle, Rupee and Jamesy P. with major record
deals. More recently, Dlife supported Alison Hinds’ “Roll It” record, which has
now entered daytime rotation at Hot 97.
However Dlife has not forgotten his roots. He is still featured on pirate
stations 95.9 Wah Gwan Radio in Brooklyn and Mixx96 in Miami (along with DJ
Khaled), and performs weekly in Soca hotbeds like Jamaica, Queens and Flatbush,
Brooklyn
“Soca is entering a new stage,” says Dlife. “It has the potential to be the
English-language reggaeton and to fill a niche left by the hardcore nature of
dancehall reggae. I’m excited to be involved with a music that has the power to
transform American culture.”
Check out D-LIFE live in
Montreal on Saturday September 27, 2008 for Firemania Fete Part IV. This event
will take place at the Ultimate Spot, E.B. Club Lounge located at 5345 De
Maisonneuve St. West in Montreal. Tickets in stores mid-August. More information
coming soon. This event is brought to you by MAWGA K Promotions in association
with the Caribbean Student's Society of McGill University.

wasn't until his third album that he garnered breakout commercial success with
his lead single, "We Fly High". This song reached the top of the Hot Rap Tracks
Billboard Chart, and peaked at #5 on the Billboard Hot 100. The song's
popularity spawned two official remixes, an "All-Star Remix" with appearances by
T.I., Diddy, Jermaine Dupri and Young Dro, and a "Giants Remix", named after the
New York Giants. Players like Michael Strahan and Plaxico Burress helped make
the "Ballin!" dance move, showcased in the original video, as just throwing up a
fake jump shot every time the ad-lib 'ballin' was stated in the song, a pop
culture phenomenon, doing the dance move after big plays during a Monday Night
Football game. The album, Hustler's P.O.M.E. (Product of My Environment) was
certified gold.

::: BERES HAMMOND RETURNS ::
July 18, 2008

Jamaican musical legend Beres Hammond will return to the United States and
Canada from July 30th to September 7th for his highly anticipated tour,
celebrating his upcoming VP album A MOMENT IN TIME. On the tour, fans can look
forward to hear his timeless classics as well brand new material from his
eagerly awaited album, set to be released September 2008.
Known to many as the originator of “Lover’s Rock” or the “Otis Redding of
Reggae,” Beres Hammond has been writing, producing and pouring out his
smoky-sweet voice over every kind of riddim track for over 3 decades. He has
repeatedly sold out some of the country’s largest and most prestigious venues
(Theatre at Madison Square Garden and Radio City Music Hall). He has paved the
way for many musicians today and is a favorite of Wyclef Jean, Carl Thomas and
Alicia Keys.
From his early days as the lead singer of the ‘70s funk-reggae infused band Zap
Pow, Beres has consistently produced hits and number one singles. While
newcomers today are searching for a breakthrough hit and old timers are plotting
their comeback, Beres is a study in longevity. He released his first studio
album, SOUL REGGAE in 1976 spawning the number one hit “One Step Ahead” and in
1985 the dancehall breakthrough “What One Dance Can Do” off his self entitled
album. He has collaborated with Reggae’s elite—Marcia Griffiths and Buju Banton
are virtually staples on any Beres tour—and has worked with legendary producers
like Willie Lindo, Steely and Clevie, and Philip “Fattis” Burrell. In 1990, his
album A LOVE AFFAIR from Donovan Germaine's Penthouse label raised his
popularity to new heights. Cuts like “Tempted To Touch” and “Who Say” with Buju
Banton are still huge in the dancehall today. During the ‘90s, Beres blazed a
trail of modern classics for a variety of producers, from the strugglers' anthem
“Putting Up Resistance” (Tappa) to lovers' laments like “Come Back Home” (Star
Trail). In 2001, Beres brought us major hits like “They Gonna Talk” and “Rock
Away” from his Grammy nominated album MUSIC IS LIFE. VP Records then released
THE ULTIMATE COLLECTION: CAN’T STOP A MAN in 2003 to commemorate Hammond’s
career, and in 2004 his latest album LOVE HAS NO BOUNDARIES, which features his
familiar romantic ballads and mid-tempo dancehall grooves. Currently, Beres is
putting the final touches on his long awaited VP release A MOMENT IN TIME.
WHEN: Thursday August 28, 2008. Doors open 9pm, showtime 10pm.
WHERE: Club Soda, 1223 St-Laurent, Downtown Montreal. Tickets available
exclusively at Triple AAA; Princessa & Mango Bay.

::: MAVADO CHARGES DROPPED ::
June 10, 2008

Jamaica's Director of
Public Prosecutions, Paula Llewellyn QC, this morning signed a letter stating
that the Crown is not continuing criminal proceedings against David Brooks AKA
Mavado. The letter was presented to the Gun Court and the matter against him
dismissed.
Mavado has been de-processed and his
finger print destroyed. Freed of all charges, Mavado is looking forward to
continuing his positive rise in Jamaica and on the world stage. “We said from
day one that we have all faith in the Jamaican justice system that Mavado will
be vindicated in this matter,” Manager Julian Jones-Griffith. “Give thanks to
God for bringing a brighter day,and to the legal team of Tom Taveres-Finson and
Antoinette Haughton.
When Mavado’s US visa was cancelled &
Canadian visa denied it was on the grounds that he had an ongoing case before
the courts. As this matter is now cleared up we will be approaching the US
Embassy & Canadian Embassy at the earliest opportunity to reapply for his work
permits, once we have gathered all the necessary documentation from the courts
etc.”
The charges arose out of an incident
that took place in July of 2007.Statements were taken at that time and despite
no new evidence emerging, Mavado was not arrested until March of 2008. He was
charged with Illegal Possession of Firearm and Shooting with Intent but the
Crown went on to decide that there was a lack of evidence against Mavado so they
could not proceed with the trial and it collapsed in court.
Mavado is thankful this chapter is now
closed and he can continue what he does best, making hits and connecting
Jamaica.
Look out for his rescheduled Canadian
tour coming soon...

::: MACKA DIAMOND SET TO PERFORM AT THE MADISON SQUARE GARDEN :::
March 25, 2008

In the words of the great
Claude McKay, “the heights of great men reached and kept were not attained by
sudden flight, but they while their companions slept, were toiling upward
throughout the night.”
Mr. McKay may have said the heights of great men reached and kept, but in this
day and age, women are toiling and achieving just as much as their male
counterparts. One such lady is none other than the self proclaimed Money Goddess
of the Dancehall, Macka Diamond. As recently as five years ago, few outside of
Jamaica knew the instantly recognizable sound of the woman who is somewhat of a
hero in the feminine circles for her bold declaration to Bun Him!!! Her biggest
hit to date.
Macka Diamond has been in the business of Dancehall for years, going through
changes so dramatic that they even affected a name change soon after the new
millennium. A move which proved to be just what the doctor prescribed, because
shortly after that, the sky became the limit, and it has been a steady uphill
climb since.
Today it seems as if the saucy-
flavored dancehall star is everywhere, literally, blaring inescapably from
radio, TV, shops, bars, nightclubs, Benzes, Lexus’s and Hummers.
Macka Diamond, who is an exceptional performer with the ability to capture new
audiences everywhere she goes; an undeniable issue, seeing that she has
mainstream radio, both locally and internationally, going crazy, with the
release of her two latest singles, Laptop and Best Dress.’
Madison Square Garden (7th Ave. & 32nd St.), Radio City Music Hall (Ave. of the
Americas & 50th St.), and the jumbotron in the middle of Times Square (42nd
St.), will come alive on the 28th of March, when the stage will erupt into a
frenzy with performances from the likes of Machel Montano, Patrice Roberts. Kat
Deluna, Wyclef Jean, Pit Bull, David Rudder, Mighty Sparrow, Problem Child and
Macka Diamond herself.
“Madison Square Garden, New York City, what can I say,” says an excited Macka,
with an ear to ear smile, who has now gone down in the history books as one of
the few Jamaican artiste, such as Marcia Griffiths, Buju Banton and Shaggy, just
to name a few, to grace the stage of such a prestigious and coveted venue. The
night is poised to be like no other, with representation from most of Soca’s A
listers.
With an appealing rhythm derived from the Jamaica’s “dancehall” genre, and
topped off by frequently raunchy lyrics under the pulsating waist moving beats,
and aimed directly at an exploding demographic – it is clear as to why Macka
Diamond is so confident and ready to take the world like a bull by the horns,
because after a successful tour of Trinidad, and getting requested for Madison
Square Garden, the only question that’s left to be asked is, what’s next for the
Diamond Girl?

::: TEK WEH YUHSELF - THE REMIX :::
January 2008

Kingston, Jamaica -- January 2008 – “Tek Weh YuhSelf,” the anthem that
created a frenzy in the Dancehalls, is back with a vengeance. This time around,
the unconquerable Mr. Vegas has joined forces with Hip Hop Queen Lil’ Kim and
Latin singing sensation Kat Deluna to unleash the song’s fiery remix “Tek Weh
Yuhself Again.”
The remix has been transformed into a multicultural fusion of hip hop, soca, and
dancehall, with a dash of Spanish flavor. “Incorporating the eclectic musical
styles of Lil’ Kim and Kat Deluna yields a perfect blend,” Mr. Vegas said with
enthusiasm. “Their strong presence makes this remix a perfect cross over hit
--destined to rock the dance floor and the music industry on a whole.”
The collaboration came about through the initiative of Mr. Cee of New York’s
famed Hot 97 radio station. Both international recording artistes Kim and Kat
were extremely excited to work on the project, passionately adding extra verses
that they thought would bring the ‘fire.’
Kat Deluna is no stranger to collaborating with Dancehall artists, as she teamed
up with Elephant Man in 2007 to create her hit single “Whine Up.” The song
ultimately reached #1 on the Billboard Hot Dance Club Play Chart. Hip Hop
veteran Lil’ Kim has also been a notable hit maker over the years and is an avid
dancehall and reggae fan – often integrating their elements into her music.
Everyone on Mr. Vegas’ team is thrilled about the remix and its possibilities.
“The remix is catchy and comes with a whole heap of vibes,” added Vegas.
“Tek Weh Yuhself Again,” which was recorded in New York, has already experienced
some buzz and will soon be heard on airwaves throughout the Caribbean and U.S. A
music video for the sizzlin’ track is in the works and should be released in
early 2008.
The single “Hot Wuk,” from Mr. Vegas’ latest album Hot It Up, gained tremendous
international airplay, reaching as far as #58 on the Hot R&B/Hip Hop Songs
Billboard Chart. There is no do doubt that this remix will exceed expectations.

::: I WAYNE BOOK OF LIFE :::
October 31,
2007

Roots and culture artists have long been a constant in Jamaica, from the
influence of legends like Bob Marley to conscious dancehall singers like Garnet
Silk. However, in the summer of 2004 a new and powerfully distinct voice emerged
on the reggae music scene. With a fresh timbre, substantive lyrics, and a
passionate performance, this singer almost single handedly led a new wave of
roots and culture reggae music that swept the island of Jamaica. I Wayne, born
Cliffroy Taylor in the working class Kingston suburb of Portmore, Jamaica,
officially hit the international scene with his #1 hit “Can’t Satisfy Her,” the
first track by a cultural reggae artist to be added to Hot 97 in New York, a
station noted for its hip hop preference. The tune then caught on in several
markets and spent over 22 weeks on the Billboard Hip Hop/R&B Hot 100 chart.
I Wayne followed up that firey description of a desperate Jamaican reality
comprised of prostitution, poverty, and sexually transmitted diseases with
“Living in Love” on the Stephen Gibbs and Errol Thompson-produced Hard Times
riddim (VP2272). It may seem as if I Wayne suddenly burst onto the scene, but
the 28 year old has been refining his craft since age 7. Coming from a musical
family, it’s not surprising that I Wayne’s first performance venture with local
group Vibes Machine took place when he was a student at Greater Portmore High
School. The collective of singers and DJs performed at afterwork parties held at
popular Kingston clubs like Cactus and Asylum, until one night, when his
bandmates were late, and I Wayne was forced to take the stage alone. The
response was tremendous, so he perfected his solo act, incorporating his keen
appreciation for singers like Sade, Bob Marley, Dennis Brown, Marcia Griffiths,
Beres Hammond, and Sizzla Kalonji, into his developing style and honing his
craft by chanting DJ style with local sound systems like Diamond Cruise and The
Legend, as well as performing at Garveymeade, an annual Portmore event held on
December 24th for the past 10 years. His distinctively fluid yet controlled
vocals won him a record deal with VP Records in 2004, and his debut album, “Lava
Ground,” hit stores in the summer of 2005. It yielded two hit singles, “Can’t
Satisfy Her” and “Living in Love,” as well as the critically praised title
track. Slipping and sliding through the higher notes of the scales with a jazz
singer’s assurance and a reggae chanter’s rough-riding rhythmic sensibilities, I
Wayne’s meteroic rise and his lyrical gift for piercing the veils that cloak
Babylonian hypocrisies sparked a new wave of enthusiasm among the industry for
this young generation of roots and culture singers and songwriters and eager
anticipation for his second set, The Book of Life (releasing November 6). This
time around, a set of spare, light-as-air roots instrumentals, produced by the
finest of Jamaica’s young mixing board talents, provides an elegant showcase for
I Wayne’s even more dazzling singing/chanting, richer melodies, and more
penetrating lyrics. Says Neil Edwards, the project’s executive producer, “For
the past year, a lot of artists have been glorifying death and destruction, so I
Wayne flipped that and focused on life.” Where many are didactic and full of
condemnation, this time around, I Wayne simply wants to remind listeners of an
essential truth—that life is a gift for which we can be grateful. “I just praise
life, just deal with it naturally,” says I Wayne. “There’s nothing wrong with
praising the sun, moon and stars and the wind, and all that create balance. Life
is love and love is life.”
The philosophy may seem simple yet “Life’s” topical range—I Wayne’s detailing of
where natural balance has been lost—is typically far-reaching and deep. He
covers domestic violence in “Jealousy and Abuse” (featuring the great Lady G);
male and female intimacy in “Need Her in I Arms”; and worldwide divisions and
anarchy in “Politics and Religion.”

::: JUSTICE FOR LUCKY DUBE :::
October 29,
2007

The murder last week of South African reggae singer Lucky Dube has saddened and
shocked many Jamaicans who had come to know and appreciate his music and its
message of peace and goodwill. Indeed, it is ironic that someone who sought,
through his art, to promote the ideal of a world without violent conflict was
cut down in such a brutal and callous manner.
Lucky Dube, news reports tell us,
was shot dead by carjackers last Thursday night in front of his son and
daughter, aged 15 and 16 respectively, when he dropped them off at their uncle's
home in Rosettenville, a suburb in southern Johannesburg. News of his murder has
triggered outrage in the entertainment industry, and particularly in countries
where Mr. Dube performed, including Jamaica. Dube drew inspiration from our very
own Peter Tosh, who himself was murdered by gunmen at his home in Barbican, St
Andrew in September 1987.At that time, people the world over expressed shock and
outrage at Peter Tosh's murder, which stained Jamaica's image and highlighted
our nagging problem of crime. Much the same has now happened to South Africa, as
the international media have focused their attention on what some have termed
the "ever-worsening" crime situation gripping that African nation. Indeed,
President Thabo Mbeki's Government has come under fresh attacks from critics who
accuse the administration of failing to fulfill its promise to bring crime under
control. Even the Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu), a
traditionally strong ally of the ruling African National Congress (ANC), is
reported to have said that it was appalled and outraged at Lucky Dube's murder
and called on the Government for solutions to crime. It's no easy task, as South
Africa, with its population of 47.9 million people, has just under 20,000
murders per year, according to statistics from the South African Police Service.
That's just over 50 murders a day - a frightening prospect for any investor and
enough to make business owners and law-abiding South Africans concerned.
That scenario is one to which
Jamaica can relate, as we struggle with our own very high crime rate and the
disincentive that it presents to potential investors. But societies that wish to
improve their standard of living cannot yield to the few mindless barbarians who
are intent on sowing mayhem at will. For giving in to thugs would open the
floodgates for lawlessness and the ultimate breakdown of society. We are not
here suggesting that President Mbeki should become a despot like his neighbor,
President Robert Mugabe in Zimbabwe, and start cracking skulls. Mr. Mbeki, even
as he confronts his own problem of an approval rating slump, needs to help shape
the kind of South Africa that will be safe for its people and their guests; the
kind of South Africa that will produce more citizens of the like of Mr. Lucky
Dube who, though born poor, did not end up living a life of crime. The same can
easily be said of the Jamaican Government who, while still fresh in office,
needs to move quickly to address the grave social and economic problems we face
in this country. Police said Sunday they have arrested five men in connection
with the killing of the reggae star.

::: TARRUS RILEY THE PARABLES :::
October 25,
2007

Not even ten
chariots with horses can stop this new Reggae voice on the scene… no, its not a
novelty act, but one that is destined for legendary status. A ‘natural’ man of
superb talent has risen like a Phoenix…some would say, its Jah will. Coming from
the combination of a Nurse and a Singer, “healing music” is how he appropriately
describes his music. Tarrus Riley has thrown his hat in the race, with a
no-doubt approach that says, “I’m here to stay”.
The singer who gave us “Larger than Life” and “Barber Chair” on his first album
Challenges on the Yaman Label, is back at it, and even better than before. His
sophomore album Parables, is currently being distributed by VP records.
Parables…’a simple story illustrating a moral or religious lesson’. The album is
suitably titled, as each song is a lesson from the book of life. Boasting 14
original tracks out of 15, produced by the multi-faceted Dean Fraser, Parables
is a respectable achievement for this young artiste.
His mother, Lavern, has been a strong supporter of his music from day one. He
was originally produced by his father, Singer Jimmy Riley, on his label ‘Love &
Promotion’. Tarrus also gained experience from Heavy Beat and Main Street, while
teaching himself how to play the keyboard and percussion instruments…Kette,
Congo and Bongo. He views his cooking similar to his music. He says every man
seasons his pot different, and for him, each instrument that makes up a song, is
the same as each seasoning that makes up the pot. No wonder Tarrus’ music is
always a potpourri of musical progressions, melodies and not to mention the
soulful voice that he has become known for.
The Title track, Parables written by Tarrus on Max Romeo’s Three Blind Mice
rhythm, cautions us to ‘read between the lines’. Tarrus said its the first he
has ever done a cover version of someone else’s song, John Legend’s, “Stay With
You”. This song will prove to be one of the perpetual classics from Tarrus
Riley. “She’s Royal” is the kind of song that creeps up on you, with an
excellent arrangement. The anthemic “Lion Paw” offers a stamp of approval, with
rhythm. And then Della Manley helps to bring us home to “Family”, a real
groove-finder capped off by a melodious chorus. Sold!
Tarrus Riley, young, gifted and Bold!
Look out for TARRUS RILEY live in concert at E.B. Club Lounge on Friday November
30th, 2007.

::: ALISON HINDS "QUEEN OF SOCA" :::
September 11,
2007

Overview on the Queen of Soca
Ask SOCA superstar ALISON HINDS what she wants her music to convey and
she replies, “More than anything, I’m hoping to expose the world to my music and
for people to really appreciate and say yes to it. It’s infectious, and happy
but can still say something and touch lives. SOCA is what I’m known for, so I
want the music to represent who I am.” The intoxicating musical movement known
as SOCA (popular dance music of the SOuthern CAribbean) is rapidly gaining
popularity among music lovers around the globe.
It is a sexy and uplifting music known for its infectious rhythms and spirited
spicy lyrics that inspires jubilant audience participation albeit with waving
hands and flags to swaying hips, all in a ritualistic celebration that
exemplifies life today in the Caribbean. ALISON HINDS is poised to become a
major force in the eruption of innovative urban-influenced Caribbean-based
artists such as fellow-Bajan popstar Rihanna, Sean Paul, or Shaggy, who are
changing the face of music worldwide. Crowned the undisputed “Queen of SOCA” by
fans worldwide, her powerful, emotional vocals and high-energy live shows are
legendary to Caribbean music fans. So it’s fitting that ALISON’s much
anticipated solo debut is entitled SOCA QUEEN. Featuring production from
heavyweights like Salaam Remi (Nas, Fugees, Amy Winehouse), SOCA QUEEN is the
album Alison was born to make. Offers ALISON,” I see myself as a modern singer.
So many genres of music influenced me and my cd reflects that eclecticism.” With
its mix of high energy to mid tempo and a soulful ballad “Island Girl”, SOCA
QUEEN is an opportunity for ALISON to expand SOCA’s boundaries.
Among SOCA QUEEN’s standout tracks is "Roll It Gal". An energetic dance track as
well as an empowering girl power anthem, “Roll It Gal” shot to the top of the
charts in Barbados, Trinidad, Jamaica and throughout the Caribbean almost
instantly upon its initial release in ‘05, “When I heard the demo I said this is
it. It was meant to be; I recorded it in one take! It connected like no other
song I’d done before.” The message? “I’m telling women to take pride in
themselves, don’t take any abuse, look after your kids, do your studies, believe
in yourself and look to God. So many women have told me that the song lifts them
up.” Along with “Roll It Gal”, ALISON reinterprets some of her previous hits
including the pro female jump up “Ladies Rule”, originally recorded with
ALISON’s own band and “Togetherness”, an upbeat party anthem that Alison
describes as “very happy and light”. Additionally, SOCA QUEEN contains banging
new songs, among them the Salaam Remi produced “The Show” and “The More You
Get”, which ALISON says is “very modern and for the girls. “I’m letting them
know that on or off the dance floor we can tell the guys what to do. It’s one of
my favorites, and working with Salaam was great, because he’s so versatile and
laid back”.
Come meet and greet Alison Hinds live in Montreal on Saturday
September 29, 2007. Listen to CKUT 90.3FM and K103.7FM Radio for more
information coming soon. Don't forget to pick up a copy of her new CD entitled:

::: BUJU BANTON RETURNS TO MONTREAL :::
July
24, 2007

ABOUT BUJU BANTON
Born Mark Anthony Myrie, better known to Reggae fans as Buju Banton, was born on
July 15, 1973 in a slum near Kingston, called Salt Lane. Considered the Voice of
Jamaica, Buju is not only a popular deejay and singer, but also a visionary
producer and a successful entrepreneur who runs his own Aksum Recording
Studio and Gargamel Productions.
Directly descending from the Maroons, a group of escaped slaves who proudly
fought off the British colonialists, as a child he was nicknamed "Buju," which
means breadfruit, a starchy round vegetable. Later, he adopted "Banton" in
tribute to one of his earliest musical influences, Burro Banton.
Buju was raised together with other 14 children by a street vendor mother and a
tile maker father. At the age of 13, after watching his favourite artists
perform at outdoor shows and local dancehalls, he began toasting under the
monicker of Gargamel. His first single, "The Ruler," was released in 1987
under the production of Robert French at Penthouse Studios.
In 1991 Buju met producer Dave Kelly and joined Donovan Germain's Penthouse
Label. One year later, he hit the charts with the singles "Bogle" and "Love Me
Browning/Love Black Woman," later included in his debut album "Mr. Mention," and
broke the great Bob Marley's record for the greatest number of number one
singles in a year.
In 1993, Banton released the hard-hitting "Voice of Jamaica." The album included
a number of conscious tracks, such as "Deportees," a song which criticized those
Jamaicans who went abroad but never sent money home, and the safe sex anthem
"Willy Don't Be Silly."
1995`s "Till Shiloh," in which Buju used a studio band instead of synthesized
music, was a very influential album and reflected his Rastafarian new beliefs.
The album included a single called "Murderer," which condemned the violence in
Jamaican dancehall music, and inspired several clubs to stop playing songs with
excessively violent subject matter.
In 1997 his album "Inna Heights" was well-received but had distribution
problems. Shortly after, Buju met the punk band Rancid and recorded with them
the tracks "Misty Days" and "Life Won't Wait." Subsequently, Buju signed with
Rancid's eclectic Anti, a subsidiary of Epitaph and released "Unchained Spirit"
in 2000.
After a three-year break from album releases, Buju returned with "Friends for
Life," which featured more sharply political songs, including the anti-gun song
"Mr. Nine."
Unhappy with the support he was given at the major labels, Buju
started his own label, Gargamel Music, and released the entirely self-produced
"Rasta Got Soul" in 2005.
Look out for BUJU BANTON live in Montreal as he performs hit
number 1 hit: "Driver" on Saturday July 28, 2007 at the CEGEP Andre-Laurendeau
in Lasalle. Opening acts will be: New Kidz (Jamaica); G-Mack (Jamaica);
Sampaloo; Kya Kindu and music will be supplied by Crystal Sound and Little
Thunder. Get your advance tickets at most west indian outlets in Montreal.

::: EMPIRE ISIS :::
April
18, 2007

ABOUT EMPIRE ISIS
Born Once in a while a new musical talent emerges who defies all preconceived
notions or ideas. These rare talents help to define popular culture and shape
society at large. Nominated for "Most Promising Entertainer" at the 2005
International Reggae & World Music
Awards, ISIS is truly redefining Reggae music. Half Welsh half Moroccan but
raised by a Ugandan stepfather who adopted her - Empire
ISIS, grew up in different places and continents such as: Canada, UK and
Morocco. ISIS grew up with a genuine love of theater and a strong
social consciousness which would help her in the years to come. At the age 16,
ISIS set off for South and Central America, bicycling through
7 countries from Panama to Mexico. Her adventures in Latin America ignited the
spark that would forever change her; however, it was in the rolling hills of
Jamaica that she truly found herself. While
filming a documentary about the BoBo Shanti (an isolated group of strict
Rastafarians in the hills of Jamaica that gave birth to conscious dancehall
pioneer, Sizzla) she realized being on stage and singing reggae was her calling.
It was on this trip that ISIS first encountered foundation artists such as
Chinna Smith and Dean Frazer, who schooled her on the history and making of
reggae music. ISIS put aside her camera, and picked up the mic. She set out on
her most challenging journey: making conscious dancehall music for the masses.
Dancehall, unofficially declared the music of the 21st century, is the platform
from which ISIS speaks on every human experience from love, sex, and friendship,
to ghetto life, politics and empowerment. Her first studio effort, Empress
Gangstress, was recorded between New York and Tuff Gong Studios in Jamaica
alongside co-producer Junior Keysland, Smith, Frazer, and other members of
reggae artist Bushmans band. ISIS has painstakingly developed her sound and
image while maintaining ownership of all her songs under her brothers record
label Monumental Records. ISIS has performed before thousands across North
America - opening for acts such as Capleton, Bounty Killa, Halfpint, Elephant
Man, Gyptian, Mr. Easy, Bushman, Shabba Ranks, Cocoa Tea, Macka Diamond, I
Wayne, and Tanya Stephens and many more. Empire ISIS brings a militant,
passionate, and high energy type of reggae music which can be appreciate by all.
From her unique look to her blazing lyrics, ISIS is a true provocateur
challenging peoples perceptions, stereotypes and common modes of thinking.
Ultimately, ISIS says, "I want to inspire people to follow their dreams, to do
what they're here on earth for."

::: COLLIE BUDDZ | COME AROUND :::
February 6, 2007

ABOUT COLLIE BUDDZ
Born in New Orleans, raised on the isle of Bermuda with intermittent stays in
urban Toronto, Colin Harper is not an easy youth to pin down geographically. His
musical alter ego Collie Buddz however, is one of the most firmly grounded
voices you may ever encounter. Incorporating influences from hip-hop to soca,
Collie’s music nevertheless has a rock-solid foundation in reggae - and its
power to connect ghetto reality with the highest heights of human aspiration -
that is a rarity even in Jamaica.
Born in 1981, at the dawn of the turbulent era signaled by the twin omens of Bob
Marley’s passing and Ronald Reagan’s election, Collie was immersed in the sound
system culture of Bermuda aka “The Rock” since the age of 6. “I used to come
home from primary school and my brother would always be on the turntables,
playin his new 45's an' I'd just be there vibesin'.” The evolution of dancehall
and sound-clash culture into a movement of it’s own in the late 80s and early
90s set the backdrop for young Collie’s discovery of his own sonic identity, and
the dancehall kings of that generation - Buju Banton, Bounty Killer and Beenie
Man served as his primary influences. “Back when Beenie and Bounty used to war
lyrically, seeing clashes wit’ Kilimanjaro an all the sound-man an’ everyt’ing…the
whole music scene for me took on a new meaning. Clash thing an’ lyrical war
became a part of my daily life from early out.”
The daily operation of trading lyrics in schoolyard clashes quickly gave way to
more serious combat as “…people startin sayin ‘Ay, Buddz got some lyrics!’ From
an early age, some of the local sounds on the island wanted to get me on
dubplate,” says Collie, who stepped into the first of many vocal booths at age
16 to voice customized dubs for some Bermudian sounds. "Sounds was always trying
to buss local artists in Bermuda.” Consistent encouragement from the various
soundmen and engineers he encountered on those dub excursions led Collie to
maintain a musical focus and eventually trek to Florida for a degree in audio
engineering, a path that ended behind the boards of his own Bermudian studio,
jointly run with his older brother (Smokey) and Sneek Success from one of
Bermuda's founding sounds, 'Newclear Weapon'. Building riddims for other artists
only expanded his love for writing and voicing his own lyrics however. “I used
to make these beats an’ none of the tunes came out how I pictured an artist
sittin’ on de riddim, so I decided to start to get in the booth myself again and
spit some lyrics. Unless my brother engineerin’ for me, I’m runnin from the
board to the booth, back to the board!” Like boot camp for a one-man army, that
experience molded the signature vocal style that defines Collie Buddz - a
songwriter who can lay his own riddim, sing the hook and chat on the verse. “I
build de riddim first and while I’m building it I don’t try an’ think about
lyrics ‘cause I'm tryin' to focus on the riddim, yunno? I make it sound as best
I can and then for a day or two I rest my ears then start de writing process. I
come up wif a melody firs’ and get that down, then start with the lyrics.” The
skill with which he compartmentalizes multiple roles in the studio also extends
to his easy movement between styles.
A falsetto that combines the singsong lover’s rock appeal of a carnival crooner
like Rupee with the deeper emotional catch of Bob Marley or Sizzla, Collie’s
voice sits with equal comfort over the jump-up pace of ragga-soca, 4/4 hip-hop
beats or an achingly slow one drop. Most strikingly on tunes like “My
Everything” he finds both the drive of dancehall and the bluesy edge of roots in
a frenetic polyrhythm built around the Latin horns of David Bowie’s “Let’s
Dance,” an up-tempo track that could be just as home in a Trinidad carnival as a
UK discothèque. “Some tunes I create are just to show that I could do anything I
put my mind to,” he explains “to show the versatility of my style.” For many
artists such versatility can be a curse and only a select few can maintain a
distinctive voice when so many styles come so easy. But on tracks like “Moving
On,” the layers of competing influences seem less like contradictions and more
like necessary stages in the development of a larger persona, something like the
succession of roles from pimp, to preacher, to something like a revolutionary
that formed Malcolm X. Instead of pulling the song apart, the warring elements
are all somehow essential to a larger vision reflected in his lyrics: “Feel like
me cyan move an’ trap in a cage / still searchin’ for the words to put ‘pon the
page…” It’s that discovery of timeless roots even within the sweatiest dancehall
track that marks the culmination of Collie’s growth.
“Nowadays when I go to put on a CD, its old tune: Alton Ellis, The Meditations,
The Heptones, Skattalites, Jacob Miller, Eric Monty Morris; love the rockers
music. From that I start to teach myself some of the history of this music,
that’s where I started to come a little more versatile with the singin’…the
foundation just straight reality, yunno. I like dancehall, but de foundation and
conscious tune really what me love.”

::: CAN YOU HEAR THE SOUND? :::
January 22, 2007

An integral part of the music, sound systems are the lifeblood that pushes
the vehicle of the music industry. More than just bringing the right vibe to a
party, sound systems have propagated the spread of reggae and dancehall music.
Coppershot Disco for instance has played across the globe with Sean Paul in
places such as Martinique, Luxembourg, Switzerland, Dubai, Canada and more.
"We play everywhere, which is music being spread out all over the place. A lot
of sounds play overseas. When you go they want to know what's happening in
Jamaica. We introduce them to the latest songs, they wanna know the dances, we
introduce them to it," said Coppershot's Matthew Gray.
CLASH RECOGNITION
Damion Wong from Irish and Chin, the managers of Mighty Crown and
other sound system, that numerous clash sounds travel as well. "Locally, the
only 'jiggy sounds', no disrespect intended, that tour are Stone Love and Swatch
International. Only clash sounds really get to tour because of the recognition
they get from clashing. Clash sounds travel to places such as Japan, Sweden,
France, Australia, New Zealand, Ghana, Italy and lots of other places," Damion
said.
Scratchy B from Cash Money claims that their sound system has
toured England, Canada and the United States. "We tour for our year to year
events and actually have a date every three months at least."
Other than touring, local work helps to push the music farther.
There are increasing number of sounds that keep street dances such as Weddy
Weddy Wednesday (Stone Love), Passa Passa (Swatch International), Dutty Sundaze
among others.
It is often at such dances that the latest songs are played to
masses and the dancers create the accompanying moves. This aspect has become so
important that according to Gray, Coppershot was approached by the World Cup
Cricket team to play at a dance in Trench Town so that tourists can come to
taste Jamaican music.
MUSIC PRODUCTION COMPANIES
Many sounds have even turned to opening their own music
production companies. Gray says; "...a lot of sounds are building studios now,
finding new artistes. Its easier for artistes to get 'buss' on a sound system
than on radio." Damion agrees claiming "sound systems help to build the local
music business because they are a medium through which artistes can really
express themselves.
Most radio stations dilute the music they play and that dampens
the vibes. Plus, there is also the other side to it where sound systems get the
songs first and buss them before they start playing on radio. Sound systems are
basically music ambassadors."
Scratchy B who has 'bussed' many artistes on their mixed CDs says
"sound play a big thing when it come to bussing artiste because without the
sound you won't hear about nuff artistes. Sound and mix CDs really buss the
majority of artistes even before the radio stations. Sound systems play a very
vital role."
But despite their efforts and importance to the industry, sound
systems most often are not as recognised as the artistes who are at the
forefront, but as the selectors say 'its just a part of the business'.

::: FOOTA HYPE LIVE IN MONTREAL :::
July 19, 2006

Foota Hype is one of the most rapid rising selectors in Jamaican dancehall music.
In Jamaica where selectors spend several years trying to make their name known to the dancehall audiences, Foota Hype’s exploits have earned him a renowned name plus a tight following in relatively record time.
His face pops up on the posters for major stage shows and concerts, and he is known as the selector who plays tracks both here and overseas for the spirited Bounty Killer.
Known for bravado and comical expressions on the microphone, Foota is a crowd favourite in the expansive music loving communities across the country.
He unofficially started his career as Oneil Thomas while a student at Calabar High.
Though he was not active in the business at that time, his father was a selector on the Singer Tone sound system. He therefore had no choice but to see the turntables at work, and to experience the joy that playing tunes for the masses brings.
His father’s skills were apparently passed on to him, but on the verbal side at first. Foota found himself mastering the art of debating forcefully among his friends, and was known to have an answer for everything. These were the building blocks of his verbal assaults he is known for while selecting.
By the time he was 13, Foota found out he could rhyme, and write, but rather than become a deejay, he chose to pursue selecting.
“I can rhyme good and write tune but it was not in me to deejay it back. Mi strength is in debating, but who knows. Maybe mi no see it yet,” he states.
His turntable duties started on the Twilight sound system, which back then had the basic set up of two turntables, a mixer, amplifiers, and three boom boxes. Nothing was basic about his experiences though.
Foota was schooled on this sound system. He learnt how to interact with his audience, and how to judge crowd reactions to his tunes. He learnt how to play a complete set starting at a slow pace and building things up to feverish excitement.
With this experience, he steadily built up his reputation, moving from community to community in Kingston’s innercities, where dancehall music’s harshest audiences live.
With the popularity came offers to join other sound systems, but he never accepted any offers until he moved to Melody One.
Melody One is owned by singer Leroy Sibbles, and with the links Sibbles had in the business, it wasn’t long before he was mingling with the likes of several leading deejays, among them, the fiery Bounty Killer.
The two had matching interests, and over time eventually became friends.
Things slowed down on Melody One over time, and Foota started hunting a suitable system to work on. He approached several with his demos, but none seemed willing to use him because of full rosters. Friends in the business encouraged him to go solo, a risky trend which had ruined other selectors.
It was not until the duo Razz and Biggie along with Bounty Killer encouraged him to venture out that he considered it seriously. He launched out after 2001, and has not looked back since then.
He plays everywhere now.
Check him out on Saturday July 22, 2006 at Castleton Gardens alongside Montreal's King Levi and special guests passing through. Also featuring Princess Buffie; Queen Sheba; Lady Splitz and more... Be there!

::: CANADIAN REGGAE STAR WINNER :::
ZULU BLAK VICTORIOUS
June 13, 2006

Zulu
Blak won the 1st Canadian Reggae Star that was held on Saturday June
10, 2006 live in Montreal at the Showcase. His grand prize includes Shocking
Vibes record deal (Beenie Man/Tanto Metro & Devonte); Music video
deal; open for Kymani Marley at the Montreal Intl. Reggae Festival; Studio Time;
5 star hotel and much more.
Biography
I was born
the youngest of 5 brothers in Kingston, Jamaica. Then immigrated to Canada at 10
years old, but traveled back to Jamaica frequently since. Became interested in
music (artistically) at the age of 16 and drew inspiration from sources like Bob
Marley, Buju Banton, Buccaneer, Bounty to name a few; as well as local Montreal
talents like Mikey Dangerous.
Encouraged
by 2 older brothers, I started practicing, lyrically, but a tragic family
situation took my focus away from practicing dancehall, and music on a whole. 2
Years down the line (in 1998), I started studying, and writing poetry in an
English course. A friend I knew from High School gave me a Bob Marley CD
collection that year with songs that Bob made from his teenage years, to music
he made at the end of his life. Music regained its place with me and I started
listening, challenging, and sometime remixing other people’s music. One of my
habits would be to listen to the ‘riddim’ and try to find out what the person
who made the riddim was trying to say. Then I would try to put words to it. I
would never right down the songs, so after a couple of weeks I would forget it.
But bit-by-bit I started to write them down and perform them for friends and
family. They all now encourage me to put it to brave use.
I started
questioning the dancehall scene in Montreal and vowed that in 2006 Montreal
would get to know me ZuluBlak

SIZZLA RETURNS TO MONTREAL
Friday February 24, 2006
Montreal (QC) - February 20, 2006, Zone1 Entertainment (out of Toronto) in collaboration with Cezar Brumeanu Productions present international superstar Sizzla Kalonji featuring the Judgment Yard Crew, performing live at Le Medley (1170 St-Denis) on Saturday, March 18th, 2006.
After his previous successfull sold-out show in Montreal and Toronto in August 2004, Sizzla is now going on a Canada-wide
"Da Real LIVE Thing Tour"; in such cities as Vancouver, Calgary, Montreal, Cambridge, and Toronto, respectively.
Opening acts for the Montreal show (March 18), include Django, Sampaloo, Toronto's Sample King, and more. Hosts for the night include Prymtym and Don Ignorance. Music will be provided by Montreal's own Little Thunder, Assassins, and Toronto's King
Klepto.
Sizzla Kalonji hails from August Town, Kingston in Jamaica. After his discovery in the 1990's, he was quickly catapulted to the forefront of Reggae music's roots movement. As one of reggae music's most prolific artists, Sizzla has the reputation of mastering the art of fusing socially charged lyrics and contemporary dancehall beats. As a member of the militant Bobo Ashanti tribe, Sizzla draws on his religious and social beliefs to condemn oppression and injustice. Among his listeners he has a strong appeal because he is able to give voice to the struggles of Jamaican youth.
As prolific as he is, in many circles Sizzla is best known for the classic album and title track, "Praise Ye
Jah" (1997). Hip-Hop and Pop audiences were introduced to Sizzla when Hip-Hop star
Ja-Rule sampled "Solid As A Rock" (2002) in 2003 for his song "The Crown".
Sizzla has recently signed with the Damon Dash Music Group
(DDMG). Sizzla has over 30 full-length albums released for labels like VP Records,
Greensleeves, and Jet Star- countless 7-inch singles released in his native Jamaica - including the crossover smash "Just One Of Those Days (Dry Cry)". And now, his forthcoming DDMG release, set for an early-2006 release, will mark Sizzla's major-label debut.
If you've loved Sizzla's last performances in 2004, you'll definitely not want to miss this one!

TWIN OF TWINS
Sunday September 25, 2005
In August of
2005, the Twin of Twins CD Stir it Up Vol.5 “The Crucifiction of the Ghetto”
spent three weeks at # 1 on the Jamaican X-News and Hot 102 album charts. An
amazing 12 years after their first “Stir it Up” CD started bubbling underground;
the Twins finally achieved the mainstream recognition that they had been
diligently striving for their entire career. The 5th volume in the
series perfected their formula of combining well crafted music from these Grammy
Nominated songwriters, alongside biting social commentary, and comical
interpretations of real life situations and people.
In the short time since the December, 2004 release of their
groundbreaking “Crucifiction of the Ghetto”, demand for the Twins has lead them
to perform at many of the major shows in Jamaica, including what critics called
a “brilliant” performance on dancehall night of Reggae Sumfest. The Twin of
Twins have started extensive touring of the US, and have future shows scheduled
for Europe and many of the Caribbean islands, where their CD has achieved a
“cult” status. Alongside the “Billboard charting” producer Henry K. who manages
the record label, their “Kingston 13” imprint has established its own
independent worldwide distribution network, and has initiated an intensive
internet presence.
Fall 2005, will see the release of the highly anticipated
new album “Stir it Up” vol.6 “The Resurrection of the Ghetto”. Recorded in
their private studio in Kingston, the new CD will continue to feature some of
the characters that the public has embraced with such vigor, and as always will
shock and surprise listeners with new voices from the Jamaican and the
International music scene. A new twist to this CD is the inclusion of some the
hit singles the Twins have recently recorded for other producers, further
cementing their reputation as world class Djs. The Twins have acquired street
credibility for an unwavering stance on issues that connect with everyday
people. This stance has created a loyal following that has helped The Twins
build an independent, self reliant infrastructure that lets them take their
message and music directly to the people. The fact that the Twins can have a Top
10 selling CD for over 3 months, in spite of pirating, and without a music video
or “radio hit” single, shows their power draw listeners, record buyers and
concert audiences.

WHO IS RIHANNA?
Sunday August 27th, 2005 (www.bajandancehall.com)
There's nothing like the warm spirit of the Caribbean to re-energize a dry,
stale season of the same old song and dance. And with summer fast approaching
there couldn't be a better time for Barbados-born singer Rihanna to break into
an industry that is eager to celebrate the next big thing. Thanks to
multi-platinum island-born superstars like Sean Paul, Shaggy and Elephant Man,
the mainstream has been primed for a rhythmic female star to step into the
forefront of popular music.
Besides ripping traditional reggae tracks like a seasoned dancehall queen,
the stunning 17-year-old Rihanna possesses a powerful singing voice that
conjures up feelings and experiences way beyond her years. It's no wonder that
all it took was a quick audition with Shawn “Jay-Z” Carter, President and CEO of
Def Jam Recordings, for the green-eyed beauty to solidify a recording contract
with the multi-million dollar record company. While that performance ended up
changing her life forever, the sweet natured island girl laughs at her own
naiveté at the time. "I was in the lobby shaking!," remembers Rihanna with a
healthy dose of her Bajan accent hanging onto every one of her words. "I saw
just a little bit of Jay's face down the hall and I was just like, 'Oh my God!'
I had never met a celebrity, and to meet a celebrity who's also the president of
the label, that was crazy!!"
Luckily Rihanna was able to shake the jitters as soon as she started her
impromptu showcase, a performance that forced her future label bosses to sign
the deal before she walked out of their offices. "We were there until 4:30 in
the morning closing the deal. Every time I signed my name I was just smiling."

CAPLETON - REIGN OF FIRE
Sunday August 27, 2005
It has been decades now that
Rastafarian culture has been very dominant in Jamaica. In earlier years, they
were rigidly discriminated against and at one time they were even being referred
to as 'The Blackheart Man.' However, through their confidence and persistence,
their religion has become so powerful that its traits can now be found on each
corner of the globe. Nevertheless, it was music which is one of the more
important factors that brought about this change. Bob Marley, the reggae
ambassador, was one of the first Rastafarians whose music and culture had a
great impact on the world. On the other hand, as far as dancehall is concerned a
young Ras who hails from the Parish of St Mary can be held liable for
maintaining this culture through music, but from a different angle.
Born Clifton George Bailey III, Capleton is no longer taken aback that even
though he is of African descent, his name is one third English, Greek, and
Irish. As a youth growing up, he loved to talk and one day he intervened into a
conversation with some of his friends and began to draw some important points.
They were very astonished and said to themselves, he must be lawyer Capleton, an
infamous lawyer from St Mary at the time. From then on he was stuck with the
name which he still uses whenever he makes appearances worldwide. However, it
was in 1989 that he got his break even though he believes that he was musically
inclined from a youth. He feels that it was the manifestation of Jah that made
him choose a career in music, although he was influenced musically by Bob
Marley, Bunny Wailor and Peter Tosh. At the time, Papa San was his favorite
deejay because he liked the length of his lyrics and so, it inspired him to
create longer ones.
On numerous occasions you can hear
Capleton associating himself with the David House Crew. He explains that they
are just some warriors who are burning some different kinds of fire. The crew
consists of artists like Sizzla, Determine, Jah Mason, Jah Thunder, Militiary
Man, Jah Fiery and a few others. They did a collaboration called 'Hail The King'
which was a big tune in the dancehall and we can look out for more potent tunes
coming out from this cocksure group. Possibly, you may see this on Rueben
Productions, a label which the deejay Capleton is planning to unveil soon. He
chose the name because the Rueben tribe is blessed with excellence of dignity,
unstable like water and is the beginning of strength. This label will be based
in St Mary, Capleton's home parish as he plans to break out a lot of youths, not
only from surrounding area but also as far as Africa.
In closing, Capleton advises the
youths and his fans to keep listening to the music because the music is an
international language that speaks for itself in many different levels. In his
opinion, music is also a natural source of life because if one does not have
food and water, the music can still soothe the soul. In addition, the deejay
would like to let everyone know that life is not just about sex, money and
material things. We have greater elements that surround life which are much more
valuable like patience and faithfulness, having a clean heart and a clear
conscience and a firm meditation. He also recommends that we be ourselves and
remember that God is not a spirit so we should leave the fantasy and illusion
behind.
Naturally, Capleton is one of the
better deejays you can find in the industry today. He has already proved his
ability and versatility by topping the Billboard charts and by creating numerous
dancehall classics for which our future generations will find pleasure. A
message is always in his music and he constantly does his best at bringing forth
tunes making us aware of who we are. His music and teachings are consistent with
those of the straight and narrow road and we definitely should be on the alert
for more hits and words of wisdom coming out of this pliant artist.
Capleton will be in Montreal live in
concert on Friday October 7 in Montreal. More info coming soon...
